Burlington Landscaping

Landscaping & Property Care FAQ

Find practical answers about landscaping projects, repairs, lawn care, property approvals, maintenance and snow services in Burlington.

Good landscaping questions begin with the property and the way you want to use it. These answers help you identify the next decision, the information worth gathering and the service or planning guide that fits. They do not replace an assessment of the site or confirmation of a particular approval.

Projects and recurring care have different scopes. A new patio, a repaired lawn and a winter driveway arrangement should each have clear boundaries and responsibilities. Use the questions below to prepare a useful enquiry, then follow the relevant link for more detail.

Planning a property project

Start with the problem you want to change, not a list of products. Photograph the relationship between the house, yard and access route. Note retained trees, drainage concerns and future work that might use the same space. A project is easier to discuss when the important constraints are visible from the beginning.

Scope, design and estimates

What landscaping services are available in Burlington?

The service range includes landscape design and construction, interlocking and other hardscape, lawns and gardens, drainage work, outdoor features, recurring property care and winter services. The right starting point depends on whether you are changing a space, correcting a problem or arranging ongoing care. Explore the landscaping services to find the closest scope.

Where should a landscaping project begin?

Begin with use, access, grade and water. Explain how people move through the property, what currently fails and which features should remain. If the intended layout is unresolved, planning the relationships first can prevent a new surface or planting bed from blocking a later project. The property-planning hub organizes these decisions.

Do you provide landscape design and construction?

Landscape design and build is an available service scope. The first discussion should distinguish design development from construction of a defined plan and identify any professional or authority work the property may need. Do not assume that structural engineering, surveying, arborist work or permit approval is included in a landscape construction quotation.

Can a backyard project be completed in phases?

A phased approach can work when the eventual layout and temporary conditions are understood. Put access, grade, water and buried work in the right order before finishing delicate surfaces or planting. Define a usable endpoint for each phase and identify anything later work will disturb. Avoid treating disconnected purchases as a coordinated plan.

What information should I send for an estimate?

Provide the address, property type, service needed, approximate project area, current problem and desired change. Add wide photographs, close views of specific defects, access details, timing preferences and any survey or existing plan. Mention shared-property permissions and known utilities. Explain priorities and constraints instead of guessing the construction method.

What affects landscaping cost?

Area and finish matter, but so do demolition, disposal, access, supporting ground, grade, water, edges, structures and restoration. A small constrained project may involve substantial preparation. Compare complete scopes, including exclusions and care responsibilities, rather than expecting a universal package price. The quote-comparison guide provides a practical checklist.

Paving, water and lawns

Why does interlocking sink?

Possible causes include movement or loss of support, concentrated water, unsuitable ground, edge failure or a use the assembly was not built to support. The visible dip does not reveal the whole cause. Look at its pattern and surrounding conditions, then assess the supporting work before simply adding material under the affected stones.

Can existing interlock be repaired?

Sound units and a stable surrounding area can make repair worth assessing. The cause, repair boundary, ability to lift the stones and matching limitations matter. Wider movement or unsuitable grades may justify a larger reconstruction. The repair-or-replace guide compares these decisions without assuming replacement is always necessary.

What causes a wet backyard?

Water may be concentrated by roof discharge, trapped in a low point, slowed by compacted or saturated ground or blocked along an existing route. Record when it appears and where it travels. A puddle photograph alone cannot establish the cause or the right outlet. Begin with observation before choosing a drain.

Can grading help with drainage?

Changing levels can help when a coherent surface route is possible, but the house, boundaries, retained features and lawful destination all constrain the design. Raising one area can move a problem elsewhere. Confirm the proposed levels and Burlington site-alteration requirements before treating extra topsoil as a simple solution.

Does new sod fix a wet yard?

New sod does not correct a persistent low point, blocked outlet or concentrated water source. The ground and drainage conditions need to support living turf first. Otherwise the new finish may struggle in the same location. The yard drainage guide explains how to document the problem.

Should I choose sod or overseeding?

Consider how much useful grass remains, the condition of the ground, the desired speed of coverage and the care you can provide. Overseeding works with retained lawn; sod creates a new covered surface after preparation. Both need establishment care. The lawn-options guide compares them with artificial turf.

Is artificial turf maintenance-free?

No. Debris, pet use, edges and product-specific grooming or infill requirements still need attention. The supporting assembly and drainage also matter. Discuss cleaning, exposed-sun conditions, future access and the intended activity before selecting a system. A manufactured surface changes the maintenance tasks rather than removing them.

Property rules and sensitive features

Do driveway extensions require City approval?

Burlington requires a driveway modification permit before covered alterations unless the work is subject to site-plan approval. Confirm the proposed layout and applicable zoning. Curb or public-sidewalk changes must be arranged through the City. An interlocking border is not automatically exempt because it resembles landscaping.

Can a driveway be widened over the front lawn?

Not simply because space appears available. The applicable zoning, combined hard-surface rules, trees, drainage and road connection need review for the address. Keep proposed parking area separate from a decorative walkway in the discussion. The City must confirm what layout can be approved before a wider surface is ordered.

Do retaining walls require permits?

Wall height is only part of the review. Supported grade, nearby loads, boundaries, water and fall protection affect the design and approval questions. Check both building and site-alteration requirements for the proposed wall. A low garden edge and a wall supporting a driveway are not interchangeable construction details.

Does a deck require a permit?

The answer depends on the design and the applicable City requirements, including attachment, elevation and any roof or enclosure. Zoning and other reviews may remain relevant even where a building-permit exemption applies. Confirm the actual proposal rather than relying on a neighbour’s deck or an old online size rule.

What rules apply to fences?

Confirm the applicable zoning regime, actual lot lines, grade measurement, street or corner visibility and any pool-enclosure conditions. An ordinary boundary fence and a pool barrier have different functions. Do not order the height and location from a general example without checking how the rules apply to the property.

Can landscaping affect protected trees?

Yes. Excavation, grade changes, equipment movement and material storage can affect roots even when a trunk remains standing. Identify City, private, boundary and potentially protected trees before choosing the working route. Tree protection review and qualified advice may be needed before paving, trenching, posts or soil work near them.

Can you landscape around a pool?

Pool landscaping can include the surrounding surfaces, planting, circulation and related outdoor space. Coordinate it with the pool approval, enclosure, gates, equipment access and final levels. The landscaping scope does not by itself establish pool-installation capability or replace the approved enclosure requirements.

Use current City information for the proposed work

Property requirements depend on the address and design. These official pages are starting points for confirmation, not a declaration that a specific project has approval.

Recurring care and winter services

Do you offer lawn maintenance?

Lawn maintenance is an available service. Define the area, access, desired tasks and treatment of edges, clippings and obstacles. Mowing is different from renovation, aeration, overseeding or correcting a drainage problem. The agreed scope should state which tasks are recurring and which are separate work.

Do you provide commercial maintenance?

Commercial property care is an available scope, including discussion of common lawns, planting and grounds. Identify the decision maker, site boundaries, public routes, parking interfaces and any shared responsibilities. Frequency, reporting, seasonal tasks and exclusions should be agreed for the particular site; there is no assumed universal package.

Do you provide residential snow removal?

Residential snow removal is available as a service scope. Identify the driveway, private entrance, steps and paths to be included, as well as snow-storage space. Triggers, timing, windrow returns and ice treatment must be confirmed in the actual arrangement. No response time or automatic return visit should be assumed.

Does Burlington clear driveway windrows?

The City has a registered seasonal windrow-clearing program with conditions and limited availability; it is not automatic service for every driveway. Check the current City page for the applicable season and registration status. Private driveway and entrance care should state its own windrow scope and must not be confused with municipal road or sidewalk clearing.

Confirm the current municipal winter arrangement

Use the City’s current windrow-program information before relying on registration or service availability. Private service terms are agreed separately.
